About Us

Hello, and thank you for visiting Marshall Law, P.A.!

Knowing who you work with is important because a working relationship is no different than a friendship; you need to know and understand the lawyer you are putting your trust in.  To help further our working relationship I want to tell you more about myself and Marshall Law, P.A.

About Me

I was born and raised in Central-Ohio.  I did not move to Florida until 2005, when I was just 32 years old.  Moving to Florida was a decision made from the standpoint of it being the most practical place for me to practice estate planning, but for me Florida has become more than just a good place to practice law.

Florida is my home state; I cannot imagine living anywhere else as this is where I met my wife (Patti) and where I find life to be so very fun and exciting.  When I first moved to Florida I lived and worked in the Destin, Florida.  Although I developed a deep appreciation for Florida’s beaches and native wildlife while living in Destin, it was not until my wife and I moved to central-Florida in 2014 that my love Florida grew to what it is now.  As central-Florida residents, Patti and I can do activities we both enjoy on a regular basis.  Some of our favorite activities include biking or rollerblading various “rails to trails” locations through the area, visiting lighthouses (the St. Augustine and Jupiter lighthouses being our two favorites), fishing, paddle boarding, and traveling to Kennedy Space Center to watch SpaceX rocket launches (I was present for the Falcon Heavy Arabsat launch in April 2019).  When Patti and I are not working or off on some adventure, you will find us at home enjoying our free time by working in the yard, sprucing up our house, or playing with our dogs.

My Experience

I graduated from the University of Akron School of Law and the University School of Business with a Juris Doctorate and Master of Taxation degrees in December 2005. I was admitted to the Florida Bar in May 2006 and began practicing law in the areas of estate planning, trust administration, probate, guardianship, tax law, business transactions and real estate.

In 2008, I was admitted to the Federal Tax Court and became a Registered Representative with the IRS.  Then in 2012, I was admitted to the Ohio Bar without examination upon the unanimous vote of the Ohio Supreme Court as I was able to demonstrate my work as an attorney in Florida met the character, ethical and skill requirements necessary to practice law in Ohio.

I strive to give back to the local community by participating in various charitable and/or non-profit organizations.  I previously served as an executive board member of the Lady Lake Chamber of Commerce, President of the Estate Planning Council of the Emerald Coast, President of the Destin Kiwanis, and board member for the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center.

To further my legal knowledge and skills I am a member of WealthCounsel, LLC, an organization dedicated to excellence in the estate planning industry.  I also write and publish articles on legal topics relevant to current news stories and other issues affecting the general public, and participate in presenting continuing education courses for other attorneys on the areas of law I practice.  You may have seen some of my articles in Style Magazine, Village Neighbor and Village Neighbor South magazines, but you can also find some of my articles and other written materials in my blog.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, I worked in the insurance and financial services industry, holding insurance licenses in Ohio and North Carolina, and a Registered Representative status with FINRA (f/k/a NASD).

Why Choose Marshall Law?

I love being a lawyer, and I have a passion for the areas of law I choose to practice.  I decided to do estate planning, trust administration, probate, etc. because each client’s unique circumstances presents a completely new challenge.  In essence, each new client presents me with a puzzle having its own unique design that I have to figure out how to put together with the knowledge and skills I developed over my legal career.  What sets me apart from other law lawyers and law firms is my desire to educate my clients so they see the puzzle and solution as I do so they know their particular issue has been properly addressed.

Now that you understand why I love being a lawyer, let me next tell you why Marshall Law, P.A. is the client-centered law firm for you:

Education. It is far too common for people to have an attorney representing them in a matter but be completely in the dark as to what is happening with their case and why certain actions are being taken.  It is my belief attorneys should be educators as much as counselors; attorneys need to make sure their clients know what is going on and why.  This may mean spending additional time and effort with clients, but nothing should get in the way of making sure a client understands exactly what is being done on their behalf and why it is necessary to further their goals.

Customer Tailored Plans. No two clients are the same, and no two cases are the same.  Whether I am assembling an estate plan or handling a probate case, it is important I develop an understanding of the client’s goals and the underlying facts so I can custom tailor an solution that will produce the outcome my client needs and desires.  While this does require educating the client as to how their matter will be handled, it also requires custom tailoring my approach to each client’s unique circumstances.  Too many attorneys push clients to take the attorney’s lead and to ask as few questions as possible, but in a client-centered law firm the client’s needs are paramount and making sure a client receives a customized plan is the key to success.

Clients are not “Transactions”. Most attorneys are taught to address the issue for which they were hired and then move onto the next client.  In short, clients are transactions.  I believe, however, that in a client-centered law firm your prior clients should be treated with the same respect and consideration as existing clients.  At Marshall Law I strive to keep my current and prior clients aware of changes in the law that could affect their estate plans or other matters for which I was hired.  I will do this through blog posts and quarterly newsletters, although letters and/or emails may be sent if a new law passes or case decision is rendered and notification of my clients cannot wait until the next newsletter is published.  If you are not now, or have not been, a client of Marshall Law but want to receive our quarterly newsletter, then please sign up here.
